I learned an important lesson this week…
Never let someone tell you that you can’t do something.
Over the past week I’ve been making several changes and updates to my website. One of the things I’m working on is adding a payment function to a new service I’ll have on my site soon. (I’ll share more soon!) I’ve been working with a third party payment processor and I recently reached out to them to ask if they would create a code for me to use on my site.
I explained to the customer service agent what I needed and they told me it couldn’t be done. Keep in mind, I’d seen this done on other sites so I knew it was possible. But this person insisted it wasn’t. I was thinking maybe I didn’t explain clearly what I wanted. So I tried explaining it a different way. But that wasn’t the case. This person knew exactly what I was saying and she never budged on her answer. The customer service agent continuously said what I wanted couldn’t be done.
For a split second, after we ended the call, I was thinking maybe she’s right. But I still wasn’t 100% convinced. So I got on the computer and researched everything I could about how to add this function and make it show up the way I’d seen it show up on other sites. I ended up calling the company a second time. This time someone else answered and long story short, the new person I spoke to told me that I wanted to do was totally possible. And this person even walked me through the process over the phone. How amazing, right?
This experience reminded me of the popular quote Will Smith said in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness: “Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they are going to tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.’
It’s so true! Think about a time someone told you that you couldn’t do something. Now imagine if you had listened to that person. You may not be doing the things you’re doing now. My girl Marie Forleo says “everything is figureoutable.” EVERYTHING!! If there’s something you’ve been wanting to do and someone told you it’s not possible, don’t stop looking for the answers because EVERYTHING IS FIGUREOUTABLE! 🙂
I hope the lesson above will inspire you to continue to follow your dreams and to never let someone tell you that you can’t do something. (positive things!) I’d love to hear about an important lesson you’ve learned this week. Share your experience in the comments section below!
